RE: Tucson to Phoenix walk for American dignity... From Hispanic News
I want to thank each and every one of you for considering a march in Arizona to bring attention to the plight of the undocumented. I was born and raised here as well as my parents and some grandparents.
I love this state but I deplore the hate that has arrived with the migration of mostly senior citizens retiring in Arizona. This is a double edge sword because most seniors coming from the heartland of America, from North Dakota southward to Nebraska including the great lakes area, has brought conservative non-Hispanics and to compound the problem, they vote.
They out number Hispanics who traditionally do not vote enabling the most racist police officer in the United States, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, to prey upon the undocumented by doing daily sweeps arresting anyone with a brown face and those that are undocumented are sent to ICE for deportation the same day which now has reached 1,000 persons per month.
The next sheriff’s election is November but Arpaio has won every election in his 16 years in office and he will probably win again in November.
We can not get rid of him by voting but Hispanic News is pursuing with the Arizona State Legislature changing Arizona Revised Statues that provide jurisdiction for the Sheriff.
Presently, the Sheriff has jurisdiction in Maricopa County. 90% of the population of Maricopa County is the city of Phoenix and the surrounding cities of Scottsdale, Glendale, Mesa, Tempe, Goodyear and so forth. There are 19 cities and towns in the metropolitan area.
Hispanic News published an article yesterday www.Hispanic.cc recommending the jurisdiction of the county sheriff be modified to only include the balance of the county not including cities and towns.
If the State Legislature passes this revision to the Arizona Revised Statues, the county sheriff will loose jurisdiction in the Phoenix area.
This means the county sheriff will no longer be able to do sweeps or arrest the undocumented in the Phoenix area.
This is profound.
To have the State Legislature revise state law requires a bi-partisan effort. The Republicans control the house and senate chambers of the State Legislature.
Miraculously, the most noted Republican entity in Phoenix is the Goldwater Institute and they are joining in this effort.
Hispanic News and the Goldwater Institute are trying to schedule an informational session at the state capitol to present our recommendation.
This is monumental. As such I do not want to do anything to derail this momentum.
Last night I concluded a march in the Phoenix area would galvanize the Hispanic community but may polarize the non-Hispanic community jeopardizing Republican support at the State Legislature.
I think a more fitting participation by all of you would be when we are successful in changing state law changing the sheriff’s jurisdiction, Hispanic News will host a celebration in Phoenix inviting all to join with us in a major triumph to protect the undocumented.
I am open for your thoughts. |
